Grenoble stuck in the Biarritz mud

  • Steven Setephano

Grenoble lost (33-7)

Torrential rain and strong wind. Unlike the Biarrots, the "Rouge & Bleu" were never able to control the climatic elements, which were raging on the Basque Coast on Thursday evening.

With the help of the wind, the Grenoble team dominated the early stages of the game and managed to score thanks to a selfless try by their captain, Steven Setephano, who took advantage of a touch that was poorly negotiated by the hosts (0-7, 16'). Unfortunately, the FCG players were unable to use the wind's support to widen the gap. It is finally the Basque players who benefit from it. They quickly reduced the score (3-7, 18'), then Pierre Bernard allowed his team to pass in front before half-time (10-3, 36').

Faced with the wind in the second half, the "Rouge & Bleu" have all the difficulties in the world to adapt. Biarritz quickly scored a second try (17-7, 44'), before containing the Isèrois in their 22, then widening the gap with several penalties (26-7, 78'). At the very end of the game, François Vegnaud took advantage of a ball slipped from Grenoble's hands to score his team's third try (33-7, 79'). A team that will attempt a final re-launch to win the offensive bonus. In vain.

Grenoble is therefore losing for the third consecutive time on the road (each time without any bonus) and risks seeing Oyonnax move away from the top of the league, before the arrival of the Ain players in Grenoble next Thursday. Until then, the "Rouge & Bleu" will have to recover well from this long trip and difficult match.
