FCG in Gerland, not a first

FCG already played a few games in Gerland

LOU Rugby is entering a new era on Saturday with the FCG reception at Gerland's Matmut Stadium. This will be the first game for the Lyonnais as "residents" of this stadium. However, the "Rouge & Bleu" have already played three games there.

The last one took place there more than 5 years ago, the 10th October 2011. The LOU hosted the FCG in what was then the home of Olympique Lyonnais for the 6th round of Pro D2. 30 800 spectators had taken place in the stadium that evening. Grenoble had been largely defeated 39 to 20. Franck Marechal and Romain David had scored both Grenoble tries in the second half. Nigel Hunt and Fabien Gengenbacher were on the pitch at Stade Gerland that night, as did Andrew Farley.

The first one goes back to 1999. The FCG was opposed to Clermont for the semifinal of the Championship of France. In a bitter duel between the two teams, Grenoble and Clermont fought until the last minute, when Jimmy Marlu score the 3rd try that sent Clermont Auvergne in the final (17-26). More than 26,000 people garnished Gerland, including many "Rouge & Bleu" supporters

The Grenoblois had already evolved in the former Gerland, before the renovation done for the 1998 World Cup. It was in 1990, for a quarter-final against the Racing Club of France, future champion. Geraci, Romand, Chaffardon, Alexandre, Brunat, Monteil, Mazille, Weller and Vélo played in this team coached by Michel Ringeval. Grenoble stopped after extra-time 27 to 21.

Saturday, it will be time for Grenoble to finally win at Gerland!
